Put into circulation on 10 April 1958, this 300 SL was delivered to Zurich, in Switzerland, on 18 October 1958. Having passed through the hands of its first owner, Mr Carnicelli, from Geneva, and the Marmoud Frères establishment, the car was sold on 9 June 1962, some four years after it left the factory, to Mr Daniel Pache. Registered in Lausanne with the number VD 49649, this was when its sporting career began. Daniel Pache, a gentleman driver, loved speed and had competed in the Mille Miglia in 1956, in a Studebaker. He used his new Mercedes extensively between 1962 and 1965 to compete in numerous national competitions. These included (some on more than one occasion) the Ollon-Villars hillclimb, Payerne National Slalom, Dubendorf National Slalom, Mille Mètres d’Ursins, Sierra-Montana-Crans hillclimb, Machairuz hillclimb, International Geneva Rally, Mitholz-Kandesteg hillclimb, Schauinsland national race, Saint-Ursanne-Les Rangiers hillclimb, Eigental-Freiburg hillclimb, with a hop over to Italy for the Coppa Amag in Monza, twice. Notable results included third in class in the Ollon-Villars hillclimb and the Mille Mètres d’Ursins, and 5th in class in the Coppa Amag in Monza. It was during this active period that the engine was changed, in order to keep racing.
From 1962 until Daniel Pache died, the car was kept in his garage. On 10 March 1988 it was registered in the name of Mme Sylvianne Pache, still in Lausanne, with the number VD 41551. This Mercedes 300 SL has had just two other owners since then: Jean Wicki Immobilier SA, from Nyon (registered VD 515 on 17 March 1990) and the current owner. There couldn’t be a more transparent history.
In 2016, the car benefitted from a full restoration. Cosmetic work was carried out by the well-known business Zanasi, in Italy, for the sum of around 80 000 €. The mechanical restoration work was undertaken by German specialists HK Engineering, costing approximately 100 000 €. There is currently a five-speed gearbox in the car, but the original 4-speed box, that was taken out and left un-restored, will be delivered in a crate to the new owner.
This magnificent 300 SL roadster with a fantastic sporting past comes with an impressive box containing the details of its racing history, with period rally plates, Daniel Pache’s racing licence, his medals and a host of period photos…in brief, the whole story of a 300 SL roadster in incredible images and souvenirs ! In addition, the car comes with two custom-made suitcases, a tool-kit and a large file of invoices. We invite interested parties to consult these documents along with the detailed list, year by year, of the competitions that the car has taken part in.
We are extremely pleased to be offering this car in the sale. It has the advantage of a genuine sporting history, brought to life by trophies and other historical objects that come with the car. Moreover, it has had a limited number of owners and is presented in immaculate condition, following a top-level restoration. These qualities set it apart from other 300 SL roadsters that have known a more typical past. The history of this 300 SL roadster makes it unique.
