BMW 3.0 CSL zostało stworzone jako produkcyjny egzemplarz dla uzyskania homologacji do startów w ETCC. Choć w pierwszej wersji wizualne różnice były dość subtelne, najważniejszą było zrzucenie 200 kg z masy, dzięki zastosowaniu aluminiowych paneli i bocznych szyb z poliwęglanu. Wyścigowy rywal Porsche 911 2.7 RS nie osiąga jeszcze takich cen, jak konkurent ze Stuttgartu… choć uzyskane na Retromobile 110 tys. euro (+ prowizja) za jeden z 929 wyprodukowanych egzemplarzy i tak może robić wrażenie.

The CSL project was assigned to the new competition department at BMW Motorsport, run by former driver Jochen Neerpasch, who was looking to compete in the European Touring Car Championship. The BMW 3.0 CSL was one of the very first production cars designed for racing. The first 3.0 CS coupé model, with a 180 bhp 2985cc straight six-cylinder engine, was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1971. BMW worked to lower the weight of the CSL coupé, which weighed in 200kg lower than the CS coupé.
The „Zertifikat” provided by BMW indicates that the 3.0 CSL on offer left the production line on 18 December 1972 and was delivered new to the garage BMW AG Niederlassung in Stuttgart. It was registered on 15 February 1973 to a German who kept the car until May 1976. It then passed into the hands of a certain Mr Frey for a year, before selling to M. Aicherd in December 1977. The current owner acquired the car a few years ago after it had undergone a cosmetic and mechanical restoration. We are presented here with a superb example of the 3.0-litre CSL. The original wood trim is in excellent condition. The interior has been particularly well looked after and the carpets and Recaro seats are in excellent condition. Mechanically, the engine bay is impeccable, evidence of the meticulous maintenance it has received. The engine revs freely, and the gear change is smooth. It is presented in a splendid sky blue and a visual inspection allowed us to ascertain that it is free of corrosion.
Considering how prices have shot up for its competitor in period, the Porsche 911 2.7 RS, this 3-litre CSL must represent a great opportunity to buy, and quickly, before these prices rise!
