Pierwsza generacja S klasy Mercedesa, model W116, jakoś nie może przedrzeć się do kategorii klasyków pożądanych kolekcjonersko. Jest tylko jeden wyjątek, Mercedes 450 SEL 6.9, stworzony jedynie w ilości 7380 sztuk hot rod dla gentlemanów. Punktem wyjścia dla jego jednostki było 6,3 V8 z poprzedninka, 300 SEL 6.3 generacji W109. Uzyskując po rozwierceniu pojemność 6,9 l, uzyskano największą pojemność silnika, jaką miał ówcześnie jakikolwiek samochód osobowy wyprodukowany poza USA. Zastanawiające jest, że oferujący prezentowany egzemplarz dom aukcyjny sugeruje, że modyfikacja i powiększenie jednostki to dzieło AMG. Na pewno każdy Mercedes 450 SEL 6.9 wyjechał z salonu z silnikiem o tej pojemności, a na tym aucie z katalogu AMG rozpoznać możemy pakiet Aero dynamiczny i felgi. Samochód był elementem dużej kolekcji youngtimerów licytowanych na aukcji w Essen, a jego cena osiągnęła poziom 43125 euro (184888 złotych).

Starting with a 6.3-litre Mercedes-Benz V-8 engine, AMG achieved something almost otherworldly by boring out that engine to 6.9 litres and slotting it within the engine bay of the W116-generation 450 SEL. At its time, it boasted the largest engine of any non-American production automobile and for the horsepower-hungry individual looking for a gentleman’s hot rod, there was no better choice.

Presented in an understated silver over black colour combination, this example falls right in the middle of 450 SEL 6.9 production. Originally delivered to Japan, it was purchased by its current owner and exported to Switzerland in 2016. This is a satisfying touring car bound to elicit admiring glances from knowledgeable enthusiasts and a car that will surely keep other contemporary automobiles at bay.
